The Pilot episode is the 7th chapter in the Black Goat timeline and introduces us to Elita Waite at age 30.
The episode opens with Elita and her boyfriend Theodore traveling to a seemingly innocent weekend retreat at a mysterious bed & breakfast called ‘Le Chevre Noir,’ buried deep in the woods of Maine. There they are greeted by the two strange elderly caretakers who run the place. Elita immediately seems to feel right at home while Theodore becomes increasing rattled by the eccentricities of their hosts. As his paranoia grows, so do his suspicions of something sinister lurking in the shadows. He begins having nightmares and dark visions, but are they real? Or are they just manifestations of his fear and anxiety? One thing becomes certain though, Elita is changing and it is unclear how much she knows about what is really going on.
Theodore finally reaches his breaking point and demands to leave, however Elita adamantly refuses and tenderly convinces him to stay. Confused, he finds himself torn between his love for her and his growing sense of dread. Ultimately, he soon learns that what happens next was never his choice to make…
The 6000 steps is a slow burn as only fragments of the larger story are partially revealed. In classic pilot fashion, more questions are asked than answered, but still, the episode follows a complete arc and closes with a dramatic finale leaving no question as to whether these dark forces are real or imagined.
